“This is a major step for tourism for both sides,” said Wayne Liu, director of international affairs at the Taiwan tourism bureau, said by telephone in Taipei today. The facilities will be established before next year’s spring festival, Liu said. The Lunar New Year holiday begins on Feb. 14. The Beijing office will be run by the Taiwan Straits Tourism Association, he said. Taiwan has appointed Yang Ruey-tzhong, a cabinet official, as representative to Beijing, according to a statement on the Taiwan tourism board Web site. China will send Fan Guishan, secretary general of the Mainland Cross-strait Tourism Exchange Association, Taiwan, Liu said. Taiwan expects 900,000 visitors from China this year, up from an earlier estimate of 800,000, Liu said Oct. 22. The island also forecasts 1 million visitors from China next year, Liu said then. Ties between China and Taiwan have warmed since the island’s President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May last year. Ma abandoned his predecessor’s pro-independence stance by boosting ties with China, its biggest trading partner, in an effort to revive Taiwan’s recession-hit economy. The two sides started direct flights, shipping and postal services across the Taiwan Strait on Dec. 15, ending a six-decade ban. Comments (16)
