| Chinese Premier Wen Arrives in North Korea, Meets Kim Jong Il |

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Pyongyang today and was greeted at the airport by North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Il, state media reported.
Wen was accompanied by Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, China’s envoy to the so-called six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear program, the official Xinhua News Agency and Korean Central News Agency reported. Wen’s three-day visit to North Korea comes amid a flurry of diplomatic efforts to bring Kim’s government back to the stalled international talks on its nuclear weapons programs. Kim told a Chinese envoy last month he would continue to pursue the goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula and was ready to resume dialogue. China is North Korea’s largest trading partner and host of the so-called six-party talks, which also involve South Korea, Japan, Russia and the U.S. The U.S. is willing to engage North Korea directly to restart the nuclear talks, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said on Sept. 30 in Seoul. In April, North Korea pulled out of the nuclear talks after the United Nations condemned the country for launching a missile over Japan. In May, the communist country detonated a nuclear device, its second since October 2006. Nuclear Issue North Korea warned on Sept. 30 South Korea should not interfere, rejecting South Korean President Lee Myung Bak’s offer of a comprehensive reward for giving up nuclear weapons. North Korea said the nuclear issue should be negotiated directly with the U.S. Wen held talks with North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Il, Xinhua reported from Pyongyang, without providing details on what was discussed. Wen’s visit “clearly indicates how important the Chinese party and government regard relations with North Korea,” North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper said today in a commentary carried by KCNA. “The history of the friendly relations between North Korea and China will continue generation after generation,” the paper said.
